Heartland Companies

  History

In 1969 Richard Michael started Michael’s Foundation Company in Pleasant Hill, Mo. The business became the largest residential foundation company in Kansas City. In the early 1980’s Richard decided to try farming and Michaels Foundation Company was sold to his brother.

Farming did not turn out as expected, so in April of 1987 he founded Michael’s Basement Company. Because of his reputation for quality several of his old customers from the 70’s helped him get started. He earned the reputation of being the best basement man in the area.

In 1993 he decided to retire, and sold out to his step-son Russell (Rusty) Leas. Rusty had worked in the business as a foreman and stepped easily into the position of Owner/President. He has the same reputation for quality as his step-father. Some of the customers that stated with Richard Michael are still with Rusty today. Their motto has always been “if we make a mistake, we’ll make it right with you”.

Rusty is trustworthy, honest, and a hard worker just like his step-dad. Our customers know that and depend on Rusty to do what needs to be done to insure them an attractive and sound foundation for the new home they are building.

In 2007 Rusty made the decision to sell his business. While he has made the commitment to become General Manager and retain profit and loss responsibility, his desire is to work within a larger organization that will provide additional support specifically in the financial and sales areas.
